
Colombo, March 19: Making deep inroads into the last stretch of land held by Tamil Tigers, Sri Lankan forces killed 32 LTTE rebels as they moved further into Pudukudiyirippu in the embattled north, officials said on Thursday.
Advancing Lankan troops moved deeper into identified LTTE resistance positions located in general area North-east of Pudukudiyirippu in Mullaittivu district.
At least 23 LTTE cadres were killed and as many reported injured yesterday in the clashes, officials said.
"Army troops now entering the final phase of the battle for peace continued their push in the past 24 hours and collected more and more warlike items from Pudukudirippu, Udayarakattu, Visuamad and Puliyanpokkanai areas," the Defence Ministry said.
Troops recovered 12 bodies of rebel Tigers, similar number of T-56 assault riffles and an I-com set during subsequent search operations conducted in the area.
Meanwhile, 11 more LTTE cadres were reported killed sniped in the area, security sources said.
Separately, 55 Division snipers deployed in general area South of Chalai have also reportedly killed eight Tiger rebels yesterday, Defence Ministry said.
