Heavy sea battle off Mullaitivu

At least 23 Sea Tigers were killed and three Sea Tiger boats destroyed in a fierce sea battle off the coast of Mullaitivu, the Navy said yesterday.

A navy spokesman said the navy’s elite Special Boat Squadron, Fast Attack Craft and Rapid Action Boat squadron were involved in the confrontation with the Tiger craft.

The naval troops engaged a combined cluster of two sea tiger suicide craft and one attack craft which attempted an abortive suicide attack against the Naval craft deployed on patrolling duties in the seas off Mulliativu.

Two of the suicide craft laden with high explosives and another attack craft were destroyed by naval gunfire. Meanwhile the monitoring of sea tiger communica

tion has revealed that LTTE Sea Tigers had suffered a number of casualties in this confrontation.

The navy’s patrol craft have recently inflicted heavy loses to enemy cadre and their vessels. Naval fortifications have been tightened with multiple defense barriers consisting of Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), Fast Gun Boats (FGBs), Fast Attack Craft (FACs), the Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS) and the Special Boat Squadron (SBS).

Continuous shore-based radar surveillance is also being carried out to help Naval units to prevent the remaining LTTE cadres from launching desperate attacks on the advancing security forces
